Everything you need to know about container delivery — costs, timelines, clearance requirements, and how to prepare your site.
Once your order is confirmed and payment is processed, 4SaleContainers.com coordinates delivery through professional third-party freight carriers operating from the depot nearest to your delivery address. We serve 35+ cities and ports across the United States — in most regions, there's a depot within a few hundred miles of your location.
Containers are transported on tilt-bed (roll-off) trucks or, in tight-access areas, by crane truck. The driver will position the container on your prepared drop site, then tilt the bed and slide the unit into place. The entire delivery process typically takes 30–60 minutes on-site.
Delivery pricing in the shipping container industry is standardized around a per-mile rate from the origin depot to the delivery address:
Delivery cost is priced separately from the container. When you request a quote, we calculate delivery based on the closest depot with the container type you need. Get a free quote to see the total delivered price for your location.
Example: A customer located 75 miles from the nearest depot would pay approximately $300 in mileage + the minimum $499 base, totaling roughly $400 (whichever is greater). Actual pricing varies by carrier and fuel conditions.
Most customers receive their container within 5–6 business days of payment confirmation. The timeline breaks down as follows:
Delivery times may vary based on carrier availability in your region, container size and grade availability at the nearest depot, and seasonal demand. Our agents will provide an estimated delivery window when your order is confirmed.
Before scheduling your delivery, measure your site against the following minimums. Failing to have adequate clearance is the most common cause of re-delivery fees.
60–80 ft
The truck needs room equal to the container length plus 20+ feet for the truck cab. A 40ft container delivery needs ~60ft; a 20ft needs ~40ft of straight, unobstructed drive space.
14 ft min
Standard containers are 8'6" tall; high cube containers are 9'6". Power lines, tree limbs, and overpasses must clear the container on the truck bed (add ~4ft). High cube deliveries need at least 15ft overhead.
Firm & Level
The drop site must be solid, level ground. Concrete, gravel, or compacted earth is ideal. Soft, muddy, or sloped sites can cause the truck to get stuck or the container to settle unevenly. Level within 2 inches across the footprint.
Complete this checklist before your delivery date to ensure a smooth drop-off:
When the container arrives, conduct a brief inspection before signing the delivery receipt:
Document any discrepancies with photos before the driver leaves. If there's an issue, contact our office immediately at 1-855-854-7253.
We work with third-party freight carriers who schedule deliveries based on route efficiency. We can request a general timeframe — and our agents will keep you informed — but specific delivery day and time windows are set by the carrier. Most carriers provide a 24–48 hour notice before delivery.
4SaleContainers.com offers financing options for qualified buyers. Ask your agent about financing during the quote process. Monthly payment plans can make container ownership more accessible regardless of budget.
Industry-standard delivery pricing averages $5.00 per mile from the nearest depot, with a minimum charge of $499. The delivery cost is separate from the container price. Get a free quote to see total delivered pricing for your location.
Tight-access sites may require a crane truck rather than a standard tilt-bed. Crane delivery costs more but can place a container over fences, in narrow yards, or in locations a tilt-bed can't reach. Let our agents know about your site access when requesting a quote — we'll find the right delivery method.
If the delivery truck arrives and the site isn't ready (inadequate clearance, soft ground, blocked access, no one present to receive), a re-delivery fee will apply for the second attempt. This is why we strongly recommend completing the site preparation checklist above before your scheduled delivery window.
Permit requirements vary by city and county. Many rural areas have no restrictions on container placement. Urban and suburban areas may require a temporary use permit or zoning variance, especially for permanent placement. Check with your local building department. Our agents can provide general guidance based on your location.
In some cases, yes — depot pickup is available. You would need a suitable truck and trailer rated to transport the container's weight (20ft containers weigh approximately 4,800 lbs empty; 40ft containers weigh roughly 8,400 lbs). Ask your agent if depot pickup is available in your area.
Our primary service area is the contiguous United States. We do not currently facilitate international freight shipping. For domestic delivery across the U.S., see our locations page for the full city list.
